Where is the Bay of Plenty?

The Bay of Plenty region is located between the Coromandel Peninsula and East Cape, on the Eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty’s main city, is 218 kilometres from Auckland, a journey which takes about three hours by car using state highways 27 and 2.

The roads are excellent all the way, with good passing lanes and small towns in which to take a break on your journey.

Expect some delays if travelling on Friday or Sunday afternoons and evenings, as the first part of the highway from Auckland also takes travellers to the Coromandel, another popular destination throughout the year.

The beautiful Karangahake Gorge, with its stunning river, mountain scenery and working steam train attached to a museum is a delightful scenic stop, as is the historic gold mining town of Waihi, situated just out of the gorge itself.

Coming from the south, Rotorua is a 40 minute trip away on state highway 2 and Gisborne, through the Waioeka Gorge, is about three hours drive.
